Lipno is the Lipno reservoir in south Bohemia. The visitor anchor is the Treetop Walkway at Lipno nad Vltavou, a barrier-free 675-meter ramp that rises to 40 meters and ends with a view over the lake, the Šumava forests, the Novohradské hory, and the Austrian Alps. This guide covers what the walkway includes, how the seasonal opening blocks work, how tickets and the refundable card deposit are handled, and how to fit a visit into a south Bohemia route.

What Lipno is: the reservoir and the resort at Lipno nad Vltavou

Lipno is a large reservoir on the Vltava in the Šumava foothills. There is no historic town center to walk through. The activity clusters at Lipno nad Vltavou, the resort village on the reservoir where the walkway, the sports rental shops and the family facilities sit close together.

Treat the area as a landscape destination, not a town to sightsee in. The lake provides the backdrop, and the walkway provides the organized attraction with an entry fee and printed hours. If you want a castle or a square on the same day, plan for a separate stop rather than expecting one at the lake.

The Stezka korunami stromů Lipno: 675 meters of ramp, 40 meters up

Sponsored

The walkway opened in 2012 as the first of its kind in the Czech Republic. The route is a 675-meter ramp that gains height gradually to 40 meters, which is what makes it usable for strollers and wheelchairs rather than a stair climb. The reward at the top is the long view over the lake and the surrounding ranges.

Because the climb is a ramp, the pacing is your own. Allow time for the interpretive stops on the way up and for the view deck at the top rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. The site describes the whole area as barrier-free, including the approach to the entrance.

What else is on the walkway: slides, a dry toboggan, and a bird trail

The walkway is built for families as well as for the view. The site counts 11 adrenaline sections for children, a set of interactive educational stops, a bird trail with bird clocks, and one of the longest dry toboggans in the Czech Republic. A network course adds a more physical option for older children.

Solo travelers and couples can skip the play elements and still get the view. If you are traveling with children, budget extra time for the toboggan and the bird trail, which sit outside the main ramp sequence and can stretch a visit well past an hour.

Opening hours by season

The walkway keeps a printed seasonal schedule rather than one fixed daily time. In the season shown for 2026 it opens at 10:00, closing at 17:00 in March, at 18:00 from late March through May, at 19:00 from June through late September, and back to 17:00 through early November. From early November through December the closing time is 16:00, with a second evening window of 17:00 to 20:00 from late November through December 30. It is open daily except December 24.

The cutoff matters more than the closing time. Ticket sales and entry into the area end one hour before closing, so an arrival at 16:30 in high summer will not get you onto the ramp. Build that hour into your plan, especially if you are coming by bus from Český Krumlov.

Tickets and the dynamic pricing model

Sponsored

Lipno prices walkway tickets with a dynamic model. Season, day of the week, how far ahead you buy, weather forecasts and how many tickets have already sold all shift the price, and buying early online is the cheapest route. Day-of tickets in the high season can cost more than advance purchases, so the price you see on arrival is not a fixed entry fee.

Current prices appear on the Lipno e-shop at lipnocard.cz. Enter the ticket type, the age category and the first day of validity, and the price for your date displays. The site also runs a family discount where, on selected tickets, a child pays half price when two adult or senior tickets are bought.

Some tickets carry a refundable deposit of 50 or 100 CZK for the Lipno.card, which acts as the ticket carrier. You can return the card at the machines in parking P1 and get the deposit back, or keep it to load future purchases and skip the ticket window. That deposit is part of your upfront cost, not an extra fee, and it returns only if you hand the card back.

Accessibility, parking, the Stezkabus, and dogs

The whole walkway area is described as barrier-free, and the ramp design means wheelchairs and strollers can reach the top. Parking is signed separately from the walkway entrance. A Stezkabus service is listed as a way to reach the site, which helps if you are staying elsewhere around the lake.

The walkway's own site lists a restaurant and a shop on site, so a visit can be paired with a meal without driving elsewhere. Check current details before you set out, since access rules and facilities can change by season.

Evening Treetop Walkway in July and August

In July and August the walkway runs an evening slot every Thursday from 19:00 to 21:30. That is a distinct visit from the daytime one and lands after the normal summer closing, so it does not compete with afternoon crowds. Check the ticket type when you buy, because the evening entry is not the same product as a day ticket.

Other things in the Lipno family area

Království lesa is a large forest playground aimed at children, described by the resort as the biggest children's playground in the Šumava. It sits in the same family area as the walkway. The resort also lists a wide set of rental shops for sports equipment, boats and bikes, and a season pass system that bundles several attractions.

The walkway is the main paid attraction and the one worth planning your day around. The playground is easy to skip if you are traveling without children. If you are with a family, the resort's combined passes can make a second activity cheaper than buying each entry separately, so compare the bundled price against individual tickets.

Getting to Lipno nad Vltavou from Český Krumlov and Prague

Český Krumlov is the closest well-known base in south Bohemia, and the resort area is reachable from it by road. Bus and train options serve the Lipno area, but schedules change by season, so confirm your intended departure on the carrier's current timetable before you commit to a return time. The Stezkabus is listed among the ways to reach the walkway itself.

From Prague the trip is longer, and Lipno works best as part of a multi-stop south Bohemia route rather than a single-day round trip. A sensible sequence is České Budějovice (Budweis), then Český Krumlov or Hluboká Castle, then the lake. Driving gives you the most flexibility for reaching the walkway and continuing along the reservoir afterward.

If you want a chateau and a brewery around the same trip, Hluboká Castle sits north of České Budějovice, and the Budvar brewery is in the city itself. Both make a natural pair with a Lipno day if you are moving through the region by car rather than relying on a single bus connection.

How long to allow, and summer versus spring or fall

Sponsored

For the walkway alone, allow about two hours including the ramp, the view deck, and the interpretive stops. Add an hour or more if you have children who want the toboggan, the bird trail, and the adventure sections. On a summer afternoon the site can be busy, and because ticket sales end an hour before closing, a late arrival wastes the drive.

Spring and fall bring shorter hours but calmer ramps and a better chance of a clear view over the lake. Summer gives the long evening opening on Thursdays and the longest daily hours. Whichever you choose, buy online ahead of time to get the cheaper dynamic rate and to avoid the ticket line.

Is the Lipno walkway worth building a day around?

Yes, if you want one well-organized outdoor attraction with a real view and you are already traveling through south Bohemia. No, if you are expecting a historic town. The walkway is the reason to come, the lake is the setting, and the family facilities are optional extras.

Book your ticket and pick your date on the Lipno e-shop before you travel, then decide whether the resort's bundled passes or the standalone walkway ticket suits your group. The walkway's own site prints the seasonal hours and the evening slot; confirm your date there before you set a departure time.
