Flora Olomouc: What to See at the Exhibition Grounds, Greenhouses and Parks

Flora Olomouc is a garden and exhibition complex in the heart of Olomouc, not a single ticketed sight. Its grounds hold historic parks, four exhibition halls, the Orangery, the Greenhouse Collections and the Botanical Garden with the Rosarium, so you can walk in for the greenery without buying anything. This page maps the site, explains which parts are free, which are only open on a seasonal schedule, and how the whole complex fits around a day in the city center.

Where the grounds sit in Olomouc

The complex belongs to the city center rather than the edge of town: the organization's address is Wolkerova 37/17, 779 00 Olomouc, and the parks it manages form a green ring around the historic core. That means you can reach the gardens on foot from the main squares instead of planning a separate trip out of the city. Treat the exhibition grounds as the eastern anchor of a walk that continues into the old town.

Walking is the simplest approach from the center, since the parks and the rosarium sit along routes you would cross anyway. If you arrive by train or bus, head for the historic center first and pick up the green ring from there rather than aiming at a single gate. For the wider set of stops in the city, the guide to Olomouc Attractions: 11 Visitor Guides puts the squares, churches and museums in one place.

The Greenhouse Collections in Smetana Park

The palm, cactus, tropical and subtropical greenhouses stand in Smetana Park, and they are the reason to come outside the flower-show weeks. Inside are monumental palms, the largest water lily in the world, citrus scent, one of the largest round cacti in Europe, and exotic birds and lizards with saltwater and freshwater aquariums. It is a compact collection in a park setting rather than a glass-palace attraction.

The greenhouses keep a narrow seasonal calendar. They are closed in January, open Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 16:00 in February, then Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 16:00 from March through October, and back to weekend-only 9:00 to 16:00 in November and December. Plan the greenhouse stop for a weekday only between March and October; otherwise it has to be a weekend.

Rosarium Olomouc: 1,100 rose varieties

Sponsored

The Rosarium on 17. listopadu Street is the strongest single reason to add Flora Olomouc to an Olomouc day. Founded in 1972, it holds more than 1,100 varieties of roses and over 4,500 bushes, is the second largest rosarium in the Czech Republic, and carries a National Plant Collection designation. It forms one whole with the Botanical Garden next door.

Entrance to the Rosarium is free, which makes it an easy add-on rather than a decision. Hours run daily 9:00 to 18:00 in April and May, 9:00 to 19:00 in June through August, 9:00 to 18:00 in September, 9:00 to 17:00 in October, and Monday to Friday 8:00 to 15:00 from November to March. The gates close during holidays, bad weather and selected maintenance periods, so a midweek summer morning is the safest bet.

The Botanical Garden and its flower displays

The Botanical Garden follows the Rosarium and covers 3.5 hectares next to Bezruč Park, with expositions of garden flowers plus a playground and educational games. It is a green oasis a few minutes from the center rather than a research collection behind glass. The rosarium and the botanical garden are described as one whole.

The garden keeps the same shape of season as the rosarium: daily 9:00 to 18:00 in April and May, 9:00 to 19:00 in June through August, 9:00 to 18:00 in September, 9:00 to 17:00 in October, and weekday hours of 8:00 to 15:00 from November to March. The same holiday, weather and maintenance closures apply. If roses are the goal, come between late May and August when both areas are at full daily hours.

Exhibition halls and the Orangery

The exhibition side of Flora Olomouc is a separate experience from the gardens and depends on what is showing. Hall A covers roughly 4,000 square meters, with three smaller halls and the historic Orangery building used for exhibitions and fairs, plus weddings and company events. The site has run gardening and flower exhibitions for more than sixty years, and those shows are what draw visitors from outside the region.

Exhibition entry is ticketed and tied to each event, so the halls are worth planning around a specific show rather than dropping in. The site also offers commentated tours of the greenhouses, the Rosarium, the Botanical Garden and the parks as part of its rental and services, alongside wedding ceremonies and floristic designs, so tours are arranged through the organization rather than sold at a gate. Check the events calendar for what is running during your dates.

Smetana Park, Bezruč Park and the Green Ring

Sponsored

Flora Olomouc administers the historic parks that wrap around the center: Smetana Park, Bezruč Park, Čech Park, the park under St. Wenceslas Cathedral and ASO Park. Together they make up the Green Ring, nearly 50 hectares in all, including the 700-meter-long Rudolph Parkway with its sculptural decoration, city walls and Mlýnský Brook. These are public walking spaces, not ticketed attractions.

Use the ring as a route rather than a list. A natural line runs from the greenhouses in Smetanovy sady through to Bezručovy Sady and the rosarium, then climbs toward the cathedral park. That gives you the gardens, the collections and a view of the cathedral precinct on one continuous walk.

The cathedral end of the ring puts you close to Olomouc's most important church, which is worth pairing with the park walk. The city's other landmarks sit just west, including the Holy Trinity Column on the main square and the astronomical clock on the town hall.

How much time to allow

Give the greenhouses about 45 minutes to an hour; the collection is dense but the buildings are small and the circuit is short. The rosarium and botanical garden together take roughly an hour in season, more if you linger among the 4,500 rose bushes. The historic parks need no fixed time at all if you are simply crossing the city on foot.

A realistic half day covers the greenhouses, the rosarium and the botanical garden with a walk between them, and leaves the rest of the day for the old town. If a flower show is running in the halls, add an hour or more for the exhibition itself. Visitors with limited time should pick either the collections or the historic center, not both at a rush.

Free versus ticketed parts

The split is simple: the rosarium and botanical garden are described as free to enter, the parks are public green space, and the exhibition halls are ticketed per event. That means you can build a satisfying visit around the gardens alone without paying anything. The greenhouses are the one indoor element whose access depends on the seasonal calendar rather than on a show.

Ticket prices for exhibitions are set per event and are not fixed across the year, so confirm the current price when an event is announced on the site. The grounds also publish parking information for larger shows.

What is nearby

Sponsored

The center is a short walk away, and the obvious next stops are the two landmarks on Horní náměstí: the Holy Trinity Column, a UNESCO-listed monument, and the astronomical clock on the town hall facade. Both are free to look at from the square and need only a few minutes each.

Two museums round out a fuller day: the Archdiocesan museum near the cathedral and the displays inside the town hall area. The zoo at Svatý Kopeček sits outside the center and needs its own transport, so it belongs to a different day.

If you are coming from Prague or Vienna, Olomouc works as a full stop rather than a quick pause, and the gardens give you a reason to stay the better part of a day. Arrive in the morning, take the parks and collections first while they are quiet, then move into the squares.

Gardens first, halls second

Flora Olomouc rewards travelers who treat it as a garden complex and let the exhibition halls be a bonus. The greenhouses, the free rosarium and the botanical garden can fill a calm morning, and the Green Ring ties them to the cathedral and the old town without a bus or a ticket.

Plan around seasons rather than around a single opening time: greenhouses are closed in January and weekend-only from November, the rosarium and garden shorten hours from November, and exhibitions come and go. That way the visit works whatever week you land in Olomouc.
