Olomouc Sightseeing: Plan the Square, Hill and Parks in a Day
Olomouc concentrates its sights tightly: the Holy Trinity Column and the Astronomical Clock both stand on Horní náměstí, and the cathedral sits a short climb away on Wenceslas Hill. That makes a first day easy to walk, with the parks fanning out along the edges of the old center.
The square itself costs nothing to cross, and the column is free to circle at any hour. The clock's single noon show draws the day's biggest crowd, so arrive 15–20 minutes early, then decide whether the tower climb and town hall tour — about an hour together — earn a ticket.
For architecture, St. Wenceslas Cathedral stacks Romanesque, Baroque and 1890s neo-Gothic work in one building, and booking ahead is recommended; allow about an hour. The Archdiocesan Museum on the same hill shows sacred art inside the Romanesque Zdík Palace, but it shuts Monday and Tuesday, so check the day before you go.
Green breaks bookend the center: Smetanovy sady on the west and Bezručovy Sady beneath the walls on the east. The zoo sits out at Svatý Kopeček and needs a bus, car or taxi leg, plus three to four hours.

Olomouc Astronomical Clock: What to See and the Noon Show

Smetanovy sady, Olomouc: Olomouc's Oldest Park

Bezručovy Sady, Olomouc: The Park Below the City Walls

Flora Olomouc: Exhibition Grounds, Greenhouses and Parks

Pairing the square with the hill and the parks
Start on Horní náměstí, where the column, the town hall and the clock share one open space, and walk it in about an hour. Wenceslas Hill is the natural second stop: St. Wenceslas Cathedral and the Archdiocesan Museum sit together there. Keep the parks for the ends of the day — Smetanovy sady on the western edge, Bezručovy Sady beneath the walls to the east, each a 30-minute breather. Klášterní Hradisko stands alone on the northern edge, so treat it as its own short outing.
What costs nothing on an Olomouc walk
Horní náměstí is free to walk through, and the Holy Trinity Column is free to view from the square. The clock face is free from below, though the tower, tour and exhibitions are ticketed. Bezručovy Sady and Smetanovy sady both charge nothing outside exhibitions — a pass is sold during the spring Flora show. At Flora Olomouc the rosarium and botanical garden are free, with exhibitions ticketed per event, and the grounds at Klášterní Hradisko cost nothing to wander.
