Turold Cave (Jeskyně Na Turoldu) in Mikulov: A Visitor's Guide

Turold Cave (Jeskyně Na Turoldu) delivers a genuinely unusual Czech cave tour: instead of stalactites and stalagmites, you walk past walls of calcite crystals and pale sinter that looks like petrified foam, with an emerald underground lake as the set piece. The cave lies on the northern edge of Mikulov, in the wall of a former limestone quarry on Turold hill, and the town publishes prices and month-by-month opening hours for it.

This guide covers where the cave sits, how to walk there from Mikulov's historic square, what the tour shows you, what tickets cost in CZK, which months it opens and which it does not, and how to pair the cave with the rest of Turold hill and the sights of Mikulov.

Why Turold Cave Looks Different from Other Czech Caves

Turold is the largest and most important cave of the Pálava Hills, and the total length of its corridors, halls and domes passes one kilometer. The decoration is the reason to come: sinter covers create the impression of petrified foam, calcite crystals and clusters coat walls and ceilings, and the floor is often flooded with water. Stalactites and stalagmites are rare here, so anyone expecting a classic dripstone cave should reset their expectations before buying a ticket.

Together with the neighboring Fox Hole Cave (Liščí díra), the system forms a labyrinth of roughly 2.5 kilometers, and the Lake Dome with its emerald-colored water is the highlight of the underground walk. The cave openings were exposed by quarrying, and the passages were formed in Jurassic limestone about 15 million years ago, which is what gives the rock its reef-like look.

Where the Cave Sits on Turold Hill

The entrance is in the wall of a quarry on the northern edge of Mikulov, on the limestone hill of Turold at 385 meters above sea level. Quarrying began there in 1873 and continued until 1937, and it was the quarrying that opened up the cave system now used for tours. The cave's address is U Lomu 54, and the operator's contact details are published with the ticket information.

Turold hill is three separate experiences in one: the cave itself, a nature reserve with an educational trail, and a geological park near the cave entrance. Budget for them separately rather than treating the hill as a single stop, because the trail and geopark are outdoor walks while the cave is a fixed-length guided tour.

Getting There from Mikulov's Historic Square

Sponsored

The cave sits on the northern edge of town, so the natural approach is on foot from the historic square and chateau area, heading north and slightly uphill through the streets below Turold. The hill rises directly above the built-up edge of Mikulov, and the quarry wall with the entrance is the landmark to aim for. Local transport in Mikulov is oriented around a central parking lot with connections onward, useful if you are based outside the center.

If you are coming by car, treat the cave as the first stop of a Mikulov day: park, take the tour, then walk back down into town for the square rather than driving between the two. For the rest of the town's sights and how they connect on foot, the Mikulov Attractions: 4 Visitor Guides overview maps out the options.

What You See on the Tour: Lake Dome, Calcite and Stone Foam

Entry is by guided tour, and the route covers the show sections of the cave rather than the full kilometer of passages. The Lake Dome is the visual anchor, an emerald body of water set among pale rock, and the surrounding walls show the calcite crystal clusters and sinter covers that give Turold its distinctive look.

The cave is also one of the largest and most important winter refuges for bats in the Czech Republic, including critically endangered species, with other species wintering individually. That makes the cave's seasonal calendar especially relevant to timing: the published hours run from April to mid-November and then stop, so outside that window the cave is not part of a Mikulov visit.

Tickets in CZK: Full, Reduced, Child and Family

Admission is 220 CZK full price and 180 CZK reduced for students up to 26 and pensioners 65 and over. Children aged 3 to 15 pay 110 CZK, and family admission runs 620 to 720 CZK depending on the family composition. Carry cash or check the card policy at the ticket window, and note that these are the town's published prices rather than a forecast for any later season.

There is no need to convert in your head before deciding: the cave is a modest add-on to a Mikulov day, and the family ticket makes it reasonable for a group with children. If you want a second paid sight in town, compare cave prices against what the chateau and other interiors charge before committing.

Opening Hours by Month, Including Summer Evening Tours

Sponsored

April runs daily 9 am to 4 pm; May is Tuesday to Sunday 9 am to 4:30 pm; June and July through August open daily 9 am to 5 pm. In July and August the cave adds night tours from 7 pm to 9 pm, which is the only chance to see it outside daytime hours. September and October run Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 4 pm and weekends 9 am to 4:30 pm.

November is short: until the 15th the cave opens Monday to Friday 10 am to 2:30 pm and weekends 9 am to 4 pm. The published calendar runs from April to mid-November, so plan a late-November, winter or early-spring visit around other sights in town rather than the cave.

How Long the Visit Takes

The tour is guided and confined to the cave interior, so plan the cave as a fixed block rather than an open-ended wander, then add time for the walk up from the center and back. Because the underground section is the anchor of the visit, most travelers pair it with the outdoor parts of Turold hill in the same half-day.

In practice, the cave plus the educational trail and geological park on the hill fills a morning or afternoon comfortably. If you are squeezing Mikulov into a single day, do the cave first and leave the square and chateau for after, since the cave has the tightest schedule.

The Rest of Turold Hill: Reserve, Trail and Geopark

Above and around the cave, Turold hill is a protected nature reserve, one of the oldest in the area, with an educational trail and a geological park beside the cave entrance. The wider setting is the Pálava landscape, which is why the limestone, the dry grassland and the cave all belong to one story rather than three unrelated stops.

Walking the trail adds an outdoor counterweight to the cave, and the hilltop gives you a sense of Mikulov's position below the Pálava ridge. At the foot of the hill, a separate family winery operates a tasting room and apartments under the Turold name; it is an independent business, not part of the cave visit.

Other Mikulov Sights Within Walking Distance

From the cave, walk back down into the historic square with its chateau, then climb to Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill) above town for the pilgrimage church and the view back over the rooftops. Svatý kopeček Above Mikulov covers the climb and what waits at the top.

The Jewish cemetery on the slope below the Holy Hill is another short walk from the center, with its ceremonial hall and densely packed graves. Mikulov Jewish cemetery is a quiet counterpoint to the crowded square and fits naturally into the same day as the cave.

Practical Notes: Cave Temperature, Footwear and Timing

Underground temperatures and footing are the practical questions, and the cave operator is the place to confirm them, along with the language of the guided tour and whether you can reserve a slot in advance. Wear shoes with grip, since cave paths are damp and sometimes wet where water stands on the floor.

Summer weekends and midday are the busiest times in Mikulov, so take the first morning tour and spend the crowded middle of the day on the hill or back at the square. Off-season visitors should accept that the cave's short November window and spring reopening shape the whole trip.

Does Turold Cave Fit Your Mikulov Day?

Yes, if you want one underground stop that is unlike the classic Czech dripstone caves and can be reached on foot from the center. Check the month against the published calendar first, because the cave is a seasonal sight and a December to March trip will not include it.

Build the day around the cave tour, add the Turold trail and geological park, then finish in the historic square or on the Holy Hill. Bring the CZK for the ticket in mind and confirm tour language and timing with the operator before you set out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Turold Cave guided?

Yes. Entry is by guided tour, which is the way to see the underground sections, and the town's visitor page lists a guide as part of the offer. Ask the operator about the tour language when you book.

Can you visit the Turold Cave in winter?

Only in the first half of November, when the cave opens on a shortened schedule until the 15th. The published calendar runs April to mid-November, so plan other Mikulov sights for a late-November, winter or early-spring trip.

Is the Turold Cave suitable for children?

Children aged 3 to 15 have their own ticket price and families can buy a family admission, so the cave is set up for younger visitors. The damp paths call for shoes with grip.
