Planning Mikulov sightseeing: hill walks, a ruin and a cave

Mikulov spreads its sights across the slopes around the old town: a pilgrimage hill and a ruined tower both rise directly above the center, while the Jewish cemetery sits on the western side of Kozí hill and Turold Cave waits at the northern edge. Three of the four cost nothing, so a full day here leans on walking rather than tickets.

Start with the climb to Svatý kopeček, crowned by the Chapel of St. Sebastian and a stone Stations of the Cross, then take the short red-trail walk up to Kozí hrádek. Both are open year-round and free, and together they account for roughly a full day on foot. The upper path on the holy hill is stony, so bring shoes with grip.

Turold Cave works the opposite way: it charges admission and tours run only from April to mid-November, so winter and early-spring trips miss it entirely. The Jewish cemetery, on the hillside off Hřbitovní náměstí, needs about an hour and a CZK 40 ticket that also covers the ceremonial hall exhibition.

Book nothing in advance for the hill or the tower. The cave is the one stop whose booking arrangements are worth confirming before you go.

Turold Cave trades stalactites for walls of calcite crystals and an emerald lake beneath a former quarry on Mikulov's northern edge. Tours run April to mid-November only, so winter and early-spring trips miss it entirely.

half a day · 220 CZK full, 110 CZK children 3-15 · Best for families and cave enthusiasts

Two free climbs above the old town

Svatý kopeček and Kozí hrádek both let you in without a ticket window or gate. The pilgrimage hill takes half a day at a steady pace, while the ruined late-Gothic artillery tower on Kozí vrch is reached in minutes from Kostelní náměstí on the red trail and fills about an hour. Climb the tower only when a flag is flying on the ruin.

The cave closes, the cemetery shortens its hours

Turold Cave shuts from late November through March, so shift a cold-weather visit to the holy hill or the tower, which stay open year-round. The Jewish cemetery gate is seasonal too: in October it opens weekends only, so plan that hour on a Saturday or Sunday. Neither the hill nor the tower needs booking.
