Ještěd Tower is the hyperboloid building on Mount Ještěd above Liberec, holding a hotel and a circular restaurant under the transmitter. The mountain summit reaches 1012 m, and the tower that replaced an older building was designed by architect Karel Hubáček and won the Perret Prize. This guide covers what sits at the top, how the restaurant's service windows work, and how to fit the trip into a Liberec stop.

The building and the mountain are two different things to plan. The cable car runs to the summit; what you do at the top depends on whether you want a full meal in the circular restaurant, a quick stop at Bistro 1012 on the gallery, or simply the ridge view.

What Ještěd Tower is

The summit of the Ještěd ridge reaches 1012 m, and a cable car climbs to the top. The present multi-use tower takes the shape of a rotating hyperboloid, designed by architect Karel Hubáček, and it replaced an older building on the peak. The design was awarded the Perret Prize, which is why the building turns up in discussions of Czech architecture as much as in travel plans.

Fifty years after it opened, the tower still works as a television transmitter with a hotel and restaurant inside, a milestone Czech Radio marked in 2023. That framing helps: this is not a viewing platform bolted onto a hill, but a working broadcast tower with rooms and a kitchen. Plan for a building you walk into, not a monument you circle.

Where it sits above Liberec

Ještěd is the highest point of its ridge and has drawn visitors since the 19th century, long before the hyperboloid arrived. It sits directly above Liberec in North Bohemia, which makes it the obvious half-day from the town rather than a separate destination. The cableway is the cited way to the summit, so treat it as the access decision rather than a footnote.

For the town end of the trip, Liberec: A Guide to the Town Hall, the Center and Ještěd covers the center, the town hall and the mountain in one place, so you can order a day around the cable car rather than guess.

Getting to the top by cable car

A cable car leads from Liberec to the top of the mountain. Fares, timetables and journey times are set by the operator, so check the current details before you go rather than assume a frequency. Build in slack at both ends: the cable car is a fixed-capacity lift, and a full car means waiting for the next one.

What the ride replaces is a climb of the ridge; it does not deliver you to a separate attraction complex. Everything at the summit sits in or beside the tower, so once you are up, the restaurant, café, gallery bistro and terrace are all within a short walk.

At the summit: hotel, restaurant and bistro

The tower holds Hotel Ještěd, whose restaurant is arranged in a circle, a layout the hotel describes as creating its own atmosphere whether you come for dinner, lunch, coffee or breakfast. The restaurant seats 120, and the café and bar seat 50. Pets are welcome in the restaurant, which matters if you are traveling with a dog.

Bistro 1012 on the gallery is a separate option, open daily from 9:00 to 19:00. That makes it the practical choice if you arrive before the main restaurant's lunch service or want something quicker than a seated meal.

The restaurant: menu windows and booking

The restaurant opens daily at 11:00 and serves drinks from 10:00. Daily-menu dishes can be ordered until 17:15, soups from the daily menu until 18:00, and the evening menu runs from 18:00 to 21:30. The hotel states it is open all year except December 24.

Booking matters most at lunch on weekends and public holidays, when the hotel says the restaurant is often too full to hold empty seats and cannot take a reservation. Reservations are accepted by phone from 9:00 to 20:00, and the hotel recommends calling to discuss the current situation.

Dish prices are not fixed here; the hotel keeps daytime and evening menus as separate documents on its restaurant page, so read those before you budget in koruna. Expect the kitchen to justify its pricing on scratch cooking, local producers and organic farms rather than packet mixes.

The summer terrace kiosk

Kiosk Rohanka on the terrace opens in summer during nice weather, daily from 9:00. It adds an outdoor option on a clear day, when sitting on the terrace is the point of the trip. It is weather dependent, so do not count on it as your only plan for food.

If the kiosk is shut, the gallery bistro and the restaurant cover the same hours of the day, and the café and bar take care of coffee. The tower's circular interior is the reliable fallback when the ridge is in cloud.

The view over Liberec and the ridge

From the top you look down over Liberec and along the Ještěd ridge, the reason the summit has pulled visitors since the 19th century. On a clear day the terrace and the restaurant's circular windows give you the panorama without a separate ticket. The architecture is part of the view too: the hyperboloid reads as a landmark from the town below.

The ridge carries ski slopes, pistes, ski tows and ski jumps, so the mountain has a winter identity beyond the tower. If you are in Liberec for other reasons, the Liberec Attractions: 4 Visitor Guides puts the mountain alongside the town's other stops, including the Liberec Zoo down in the valley.

Fitting Ještěd into a Liberec stop

Treat Ještěd as a half-day anchored on the cable car, not an add-on squeezed between two town sights. Aim to arrive before 11:00 if you want the gallery bistro, or around 11:00 if you want the restaurant's daily menu; arrive after 18:00 and you are into the evening menu.

Combine the mountain with the center on another part of the day, since the town hall and square sit downhill from the cable car. The Liberec Guide covers the center's layout, and the Liberec map helps you place the cable car stop against the square before you commit.

If you are traveling with children and want a second indoor stop, iQLANDIA in Liberec is a science center in the town, useful when the ridge is closed in. Keep it as a separate outing rather than trying to pair it with the summit on the same tight schedule.

Lunch at the top or a quick bistro stop?

The choice comes down to timing. For a seated lunch with the circular room and the ridge view, target the restaurant after 11:00 and call ahead if you are coming at a weekend or public-holiday lunch. For a fast stop, Bistro 1012 from 9:00 to 19:00 fits around the cable car without a reservation.

Either way, the cable car sets the day's shape, so fix that first and let the menu windows fall around it. Check the operator's current fares and times before you go, then build the rest of your Liberec time around the town center.
