Zoo Plzeň: What to See and How to Plan Your Visit

Zoo Plzeň is really two visits: the main zoological and botanical garden on the hillside at Pod Vinicemi in the city's south, and Akva Tera, a separate exhibit at Palackého 5 in the center. Treat them as two stops with two tickets and two sets of hours, and you avoid the most common planning mistake.

This guide covers both sites: where each one sits, what the main garden holds, how the Akva Tera collection and feedings work, the prices in CZK the zoo publishes, and how to fit them around the rest of Plzeň. The city's other sights are gathered in Plzeň Attractions: 8 Visitor Guides for building a route.

What Zoo Plzeň is and where it sits in Plzeň

The garden is run by the city as the Zoologická a botanická zahrada města Plzně, and the double name matters: it is a botanical garden as much as an animal collection, so the grounds reward slower walking than a quick circuit past the enclosures. Its main entrance is at Pod Vinicemi 928/9 in Plzeň, on the southern side of the city rather than in the historic core.

That split is the first thing to fix in your head. The main zoo is a half-day outdoor destination, while the downtown exhibit is a compact indoor stop that slots into a morning or afternoon of city sightseeing. If you only have a few hours in Plzeň, choose one rather than squeezing in both.

Getting to the main site at Pod Vinicemi

The main zoo sits outside the old town, so you will need a tram, bus or car rather than a walk from the central square. Get the current connection from a map app or the city transport planner before setting out, and allow extra time on weekends when the family audience peaks.

Travelers coming by car should treat the south-side location as a deliberate drive out of the center, which frees you from hunting for parking near the historic core. Those arriving by train at Plzeň's main station can take public transport south; the ride is short enough to combine with a city morning.

If you spend the day in the center instead, the main railway station is a short walk from the great synagogue, one of the city's most distinctive buildings and an easy add-on to a downtown stop.

Akva Tera: the zoo's second site in the center

Sponsored

Akva Tera is a standalone exhibit of the Plzeň zoo, not a building inside the main garden. It stands at Palackého 5 in Plzeň 3-Jižní Předměstí, a short walk from the historic core, so you can fold it into a sightseeing day without heading south. The zoo traces the exhibit back to 1962, with a major reconstruction completed in 2001 that gave it its current form.

It opened as an aquarium-and-terrarium branch of the garden and still draws aquarists and terrarium keepers as much as general visitors. That history explains the scale: this is a focused collection rather than a second zoo, and an hour or so covers it comfortably.

Because it sits downtown, Akva Tera pairs naturally with the central square and a Pilsner Urquell brewery tour, both within easy reach. Plan the exhibit as one item on a city walk rather than a destination in itself.

What to see at the main zoo: animal and botanical exhibits

The main garden organizes its displays by biogeographic region and mixes zoological and botanical exhibits, so you move through planted landscapes rather than a plain row of cages. The animal encyclopedia on the zoo site lists the species on show and is worth a scan before you go if you have particular animals in mind.

The zoo also publishes a site map, a schedule of public feedings and falconry demonstrations, which are the kind of timed events that shape a visit. Check the day's listing on arrival and build your route around one or two rather than trying to catch them all.

Budget at least half a day for the main site. The hillside layout means real walking between areas, and a botanical garden rewards a slower pace than a quick animal circuit; families with children usually need longer.

Akva Tera's fish, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates

Inside Akva Tera you get a dense collection of freshwater and marine fish, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates and other cold-blooded vertebrates, shown in modern displays that let you get close to the glass. It is a good rainy-day stop and a strong pick for children who like snakes, lizards and frogs.

Keepers answer questions about keeping and caring for many of the species, which makes the exhibit more of a working collection than a static display. Allow roughly an hour, a little more if you linger at the feeding talks.

The exhibit runs commented feedings most days on a fixed weekday pattern. Mondays at 16:00 focus on lizards, Tuesdays at 16:00 on snakes, Wednesdays at 16:00 on Guianan cock-of-the-rock and lizards, Thursdays at 16:00 on turtles, and Fridays at 16:00 on lizards again.

Weekends split into two slots: Saturdays at 10:30 for Guianan cock-of-the-rock and 14:00 for tarantulas, Sundays at 10:30 for frogs and 14:00 for archerfish. The 16:00 weekday talks are the easiest to catch after a day of sightseeing, while the 10:30 weekend slots suit an early start.

These times are for Akva Tera only and do not describe the main zoo's feeding schedule. The exhibit publishes the pattern by weekday rather than by date, so confirm it on the exhibit's own page if a specific talk decides your timing.

Tickets, hours and last entry for Akva Tera

Akva Tera opens daily from 10:00 to 19:00, with the last tour admitted at 18:30, so arriving at 18:45 means you will not get in. Adult admission is 70 Kč, and children aged 3 to 15, students up to 26 with a valid card and seniors over 60 with a valid card pay 50 Kč.

Season passes for the exhibit cost 220 Kč for adults and 150 Kč for children, students and seniors. That is worth it across several visits and rarely for a single trip, when the one-day ticket is the cheaper choice.

The zoo publishes separate admission and opening-time pages for the main garden, so read those before you travel rather than assuming the Akva Tera figures apply at Pod Vinicemi.

How much time to allow for each site

Akva Tera fits into about an hour, or 90 minutes if you time your visit around a keeper feeding. The single-room scale makes it a natural filler between two city sights rather than the anchor of the day.

The main zoo needs considerably more: half a day is a sensible minimum, and a full afternoon gives you time for the botanical side as well as the animals. In a group with young children, plan on the longer end and use the site map to avoid backtracking.

A practical split is the zoo in the morning and the center in the afternoon, or the reverse, with Akva Tera as the bridge between them. Trying to see both zoo sites plus the brewery in one day is too much.

Nearby: pairing the zoo with Plzeň's brewery and central square

The center's headline stop is the Pilsner Urquell brewery tour, which sits close to Akva Tera and the main square. Book the brewery for a slot that leaves the afternoon free if you also want the zoo's south-side site in the same visit.

The city's cathedral tower offers one of the best views over the square, and the Great Synagogue in Plzeň is a short walk from the station. Either pairs well with an Akva Tera stop.

For indoor backup on a wet day, the Plzeň historical underground and the brewery museum Plzeň are both central, and the Patton memorial Pilsen at KD Peklo covers the city's wartime story. Any of them can replace Akva Tera if the queues are long.

Practical trade-offs: two sites, one trip

Sponsored

The real trade-off is time versus convenience. Akva Tera is easy to reach from the center but small; the main zoo is a proper half-day out but needs transport and decent weather. In rain the downtown exhibit wins; in sunshine the hillside garden does.

The zoo publishes admission and opening times separately for each site rather than as one combined listing, so plan and budget for them individually. Decide which one earns your time before you set out, and treat the other as a bonus rather than part of the plan.

For families with younger children the zoo is usually the stronger pick, while adults with limited time will get more from Akva Tera plus the square. If you want a science detour instead, Techmania Science Center in Plzeň is another indoor option in the city.

Which Plzeň zoo site earns your time

Choose Akva Tera if you have a few hours in the center and want an indoor stop with a fixed feeding pattern; choose the hillside zoo at Pod Vinicemi if you can give it half a day and the weather is fair. Try both only with a full day and an early start.

The zoo's visitor page carries the main garden's practical details, including the exhibits and services it lays out for a day at Pod Vinicemi. The distance between the two sites is the one thing that shapes the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Akva Tera included in the zoo ticket?

The zoo publishes admission separately for Akva Tera and for the main garden, so plan and pay for them as separate stops rather than assuming one ticket covers both. Akva Tera sits at Palackého 5, a short walk from Plzeň's historic center, with its own opening times on the zoo site.

When are the feedings at Akva Tera?

Commented feedings run weekdays at 16:00 with a different group each day, and weekends at 10:30 and 14:00. They cover lizards, snakes, turtles, frogs, tarantulas, archerfish and Guianan cock-of-the-rock across the week.

How long should I allow for the main zoo?

Half a day is a sensible minimum for the hillside site, since the botanical garden and animal exhibits are spread over sloping ground. Add time if you plan to catch the public feedings or falconry demonstrations.
