Plzeň Historical Underground: A Visitor's Guide to the Cellars

The Plzeň Historical Underground is a guided tour through the historic cellars beneath the old center, and you join it via the Brewery Museum on Perlová street rather than at a standalone cellar door. The tour covers a stretch of a network that runs for kilometers under the streets, so you see a fraction of it in about an hour. This guide covers where the entrance sits, what the tour shows, the beer voucher that has come with the ticket, and what to wear for the cold.

What the Plzeň Historical Underground is

Beneath the historic center of Plzeň lies a system of cellars built from the 13th century onward, stacked up to three storeys deep and totaling about 17 kilometers of passages. That scale makes it one of the most extensive cellar networks in Central Europe, and it is the reason the underground is worth an hour of your day rather than a quick glance. The cellars began as storage space for houses that held brewing rights, which is why so much of the story down there is about beer.

Over the centuries the cellars took on other jobs: they sheltered citizens in wartime, stored food, and served as a hidden communication line tied into the town's defense system and ramparts. Interpretive tours walk you through corridors, cellars and wells, and a guide explains how the passages were built and what each level was for. You are looking at genuine construction, not a rebuilt exhibit, which is the main reason to take the tour.

Where it is and how to reach it

The entrance is in the heart of the Old Town, a short walk from Republic Square (náměstí Republiky), the main square where most visitors start. Tickets are sold at the Brewery Museum cash desk on Perlová street, and the tour sets off from there rather than from a separate underground entrance. If you are coming from the main train station, aim for the square first and then ask for Perlová, which runs off the old center.

Because the ticket desk is at the Brewery Museum, the underground pairs naturally with a look at the museum's brewing exhibits before or after your slot. The Plzeň Attractions: 8 Visitor Guides hub maps out the rest of the center if you want to build a half day around the square.

How visits work

You cannot wander the cellars on your own. Visits run only as guided tours, so your schedule depends on the next departure rather than on a self-paced route. In 2020 the tour was listed as lasting about 60 minutes and covering roughly 750 meters of the system.

The address to give a taxi driver or to search on a map is Perlová 4-6 in Plzeň. Arriving a little before your slot matters because the group leaves together.

What the tour covers

The route opens in the ice cellar, where winter ice was stored in the uppermost level and its meltwater dripped down to chill the cellars below, keeping beer cool through the warm months. From there the guide leads you past cellars and wells, with about 20 of the town's 360 wells visible along the way. The historical water tower from the first half of the 16th century is an important technical monument, and its 1847 pumping machine once lifted water up to the tower.

The cellars were long used to store food and beer, and in wartime they sheltered citizens, which is why the guide walks you through storage vaults, wells and the passages that served the town. Expect a mix of stonework, brick vaulting and the cool damp that comes with being a full floor below the street.

The beer connection and the voucher

Sponsored

The cellars were used to ferment, age and store the beer that made Plzeň famous, which is why a brewery town grew up around them. In 2020 tickets included a voucher for 0.3 liters of Pilsner Urquell, redeemable after the tour at one of the partner restaurants such as Na Spilce, U Salzmannů or Na Parkánu. The beer is only for visitors aged 18 and over.

If the underground whets your appetite for the brewing side, the Pilsner Urquell brewery tour takes you through the working side of the same story. Book it separately from the underground, since the two run on their own schedules.

Time needed and what to wear

Allow around an hour for the underground itself, plus time at the museum desk and a short walk back to the square. The temperature below street level sits around 6 °C year-round, so bring a warm layer even in summer.

Sensible shoes help, since the route passes over uneven stone and brick floors. If you plan to redeem the beer voucher afterward, leave a little slack in your schedule for a stop at one of the partner restaurants.

Tickets and Opening Hours

Tickets are sold at the Brewery Museum desk, and the underground runs on a seasonal pattern: in 2020, it opened daily from February through March 10:00–17:00, April through September 10:00–18:00, and October through December 10:00–17:00, with the last tour an hour before closing. In that year the ticket also included the beer voucher. Treat all of those as historic figures and expect today's schedule and rates to differ.

Check current prices, opening hours and tour times at the ticket desk or on the operator's site before you travel, since the seasonal pattern and rates shift between years. The last-tour rule matters if you arrive in the late afternoon.

What else is nearby

The Brewery Museum, whose cash desk sells the underground tickets, is right next to the tour departure point, so combining the two is the easiest way to spend a rainy morning in the center. The Great Synagogue in Plzeň is another short walk from Republic Square and worth a look if you have time.

St. Bartholomew Cathedral, Plzeň towers over the main square with its tall spire and is one of the city's landmarks. For a wider look at the city's sights beyond the cellars, see the Plzeň Attractions: 8 Visitor Guides.

Book the Underground Around Your Square Time

The Plzeň Historical Underground rewards an hour of your time with a view of the medieval city you cannot get anywhere else, and, in 2020, the beer voucher gave you a reason to linger afterward. Build your day around the square: take the cellar tour, then plan the rest of your visit from the old center.

The schedule and prices shift from year to year, so confirm the current season, last tour time and rates when you book. Layers and sensible shoes make the cold, uneven route far more comfortable.
