Brno attractions: plan your sights around a modernist landmark

Brno's sights pull in two directions. Villa Tugendhat, Mies van der Rohe's UNESCO-listed house in Černá Pole, draws more search interest than anything else here, and its interior opens only on a guided slot bought ahead. Špilberk Castle, on the western edge of the historic center, runs second, with free hilltop grounds and paid tours of rooms long kept from visitors.

The center itself rewards walking. The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul sits on Petrov hill, and the Old Town Hall by Zelný trh lets you wander its passageway and courtyard for nothing. Under Jakubské náměstí, roughly 50,000 burials fill the Brno Ossuary, Europe's second-largest after Paris, while the Church of St James above it packs a climbable 94-meter tower and a roof-truss exhibit into about an hour.

Farther out, Bystrc holds the Brno Reservoir and the 65-hectare Brno Zoo on its wooded hill. Both suit half a day, and the reservoir's ferry runs only in season.

What needs reserving before you go

Villa Tugendhat is the one place where booking is required: the interior is shown only on a guided slot bought in advance, at 200 CZK for the outside tour, while the garden and technical-floor exhibitions stay free. Špilberk Castle recommends booking for the Story of the Castle tour, the only route into the Renaissance Lounge and the Swallow's Nest, priced at 180 CZK basic or 415 CZK for a family.

The Brno Zoo also recommends booking, with adult tickets at 190 CZK from March to October. The Old Town Hall needs no reservation, and its tower ticket, 90 CZK for adults, sells only at the tower door.

Rainy days and dry days in Brno

Wet weather favors the underground and the enclosed: the Brno Ossuary under Jakubské náměstí, the Capuchin Crypt, and the nave and tower of the Church of St James. Villa Tugendhat's garden closes in snow, ice or wind, so a stormy day is no time for its free outdoor areas.

On a dry day, walk the free grounds of Špilberk Castle for city views, or take the 173 steps up the Old Town Hall tower. The Brno Reservoir's paths stay open outside boat season, April 11 to October 25, 2026, though crossings run only within it.
